5 New Year’s resolutions to keep in your wallet!

Another year has come and gone, and now it’s time to make your New Year’s resolutions. With Occupy Wall Street and Bank Transfer Day bringing finances to the forefront, maybe one of the most important resolutions is to stay on top of your finances. Most people either try to tackle their resolutions and quit, or they forget about their New Year’s resolutions by February. The biggest reason for this is because we set our goal too high or too broad.

Here are five tips to help you control your finances in 2012, based on a recent article on Moneyland.com.

1. Use cash for small purchases. Make 2012 the year you try to pay for small things, like a cup of coffee, with cash. Or maybe you make a rule to spend only cash on items totaling less than $10. Studies have shown people are more aware when they pay with cash, so you may find yourself spending less.

2. Pay off one debt. Whether it is a credit card, car loan, or a student loan; choose one to pay off this year. Tackling one debt at a time will seem more manageable then trying to eliminate all your debt at once. The satisfaction you will get from completely paying off that one thing might push you to eliminate one more, and even if it doesn’t, that is one less debt you have to pay off next year. Just make sure you don’t replace the debt you are paying off by creating another one.

3. Make saving automatic. Everyone needs to have an emergency account, but saving money for unforeseen events is difficult. Try taking as little as $15 from each paycheck and putting it into a separate savings account. Odds are you won’t even miss it if you have the money automatically deducted from your account. It can be as simple as sacrificing one lunch or dinner out a week.

4. Look into a credit union if your accounts are somewhere else. If there is one thing that came from Bank of America’s proposed $5 monthly fee, it is that everyone needs to look at the fees their financial institutions are charging and what you are getting from it. Take some time to really look into any charges on your account, things like overdraft protection and out of network ATM fees can really add up. Also take the time to weigh what features you really want out of your account; is online and mobile banking more important to you than brick and mortal locations, or do you prefer a vast ATM network.

5. Keep track of your money. Many credit unions offer text alerts. These alerts let you know when you have a low balance so you don’t end up getting an overdraft fee, or they let you know if there is a transaction over a certain amount.

Keeping track of what you are spending can not only save you money, but it can also help protect you against fraud by letting you know if your account has been compromised. Happy new year!

Stressed by Holiday Spending? Join the Club!

The “Christmas Club” that is! Credit unions have been offering this simple way of saving for decades, but the idea has never been more relevant.

A Christmas Club is a short-term savings account that usually pays out the full account balance to its account holders once each year, right before Christmas. Christmas Club accounts also typically pay depositors monthly interest.

It is a simple, stress free way to save for the holidays, and make the most of your yuletide budget. However, remember that opening the account doesn’t mean you are immune to overspending. Before opening account, decide how much you want to spend on each gift recipient, and set a clear budget. Additionally, when opening a club account, be sure to read all of the information given so you are aware of the details on how Christmas Club money can be disbursed.

Many Maine Credit Unions offer Christmas Club Accounts. Find the one that’s right for you!

Bangor FCU Uses Shared Branching Competition Winnings to Share Turkeys with Mainers in Need

More Mainers have come to benefit from Maine Credit Unions’ “Share It and Save” Competition, during which credit unions throughout the state directed members to a microsite, ShareItAndSave.org, where they could share their own financial tip. Each month, the member who shared the most unique tip was awarded $250! The campaign included a credit union competition, in which the credit union who had the highest percentage of members share tips won $2,500 to present charity of their choice. Bangor FCU of Bangor, Maine came out on top, with their members contributing 17% of the tips and 0.6% of their membership participating. The credit union chose to use their winnings to purchase 250 turkeys for a turkey drive held by a local radio station, WBZN Z107.3 FM, and challenged other businesses to match what the credit union purchased.

This donation was instrumental in making the drive the station’s most successful one ever. Held from November 15 - 17, this was the 13th "Free the Z" event. Morning personality and Program Director Arlen "Kid" Jameson lived in the Brewer Hannaford Parking Lot during that time, with the goal of collecting 2,011 turkeys which would be given to Manna Ministries for distribution to clients and redistribution to food pantries throughout Eastern and Central Maine. This year, WBZN exceeded their goal, collecting 3,134 turkeys.

Shared Branching can also help you during the busy holiday season, whether you need cash unexpectedly, or need to make a deposit away from home to add to your gift giving fund! Click here to find a location wherever your shopping adventures lead you!

Don’t Just Talk Turkey, Give Thanks by Giving Back!

On Thursday, November 17, the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger, in partnership with Good Shepherd Food-Bank, celebrated the sixth anniversary of Maine’s first “Food Mobile” at the Good Shepherd Food-Bank’ Distribution Center in Brewer. Since its inception in 2005, the Food Mobile program has distributed 2,280,743 lbs of food throughout the state.

In addition to the ceremony, to coincide with Thanksgiving, the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger provided funds to purchase 125 twelve-pound turkeys for food pantries across Maine to distribute to families in need.

This is one example of how at this time of year, giving back is the perfect way to give thanks for everything that makes you happy – and with so many volunteer opportunities to choose from, you’re sure to find one that will make you even happier. Check out http://www.volunteermaine.org/. There, you can search opportunities based your interest, whether you want to work in a thrift shop or food pantry, or spend time driving the elderly or reading to or tutoring children. There is even the opportunity to be a foster “parent” to a kitten!

Another great way to make a difference is to visit a local credit union, and see how they are working to end hunger in your community. From selling CDs and candles, to holding bake sales, there are many ways you can help your credit union give back.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Maine Credit Unions Celebrate Credit Union Day with 10 Months of Saving, Sharing

After a campaign that brought member interaction, increased Shared Branching transactions and money to both members and a charity of a winning credit union’s choice, Maine’s Credit Unions’ Share it and Save campaign concluded on International Credit Union Day, October 20. During the ten-month campaign, credit unions throughout the state have directed members to a microsite, ShareItAndSave.org, where they could share their own financial tip. Each month, the member who shared the most unique tip was awarded $250! The site also features a Shared Branch Locator, with which users can enter an address or intersection to find the three closest Shared Branches. The campaign included a credit union competition, in which the credit union who had the highest percentage of members share tips won $2,500 to present charity of their choice. Bangor FCU came out on top, with their members contributing 17% of the tips and 0.6% of their membership participating. The credit union used a variety of lobby collateral and online banner ads to promote the program with their members.

Members also benefited, with 11 happy winners of $250 coming from different credit unions. The winning tip for September was submitted by Town & Country FCU member Diane Unni of Biddeford, Maine, with the tip, “My husband and I are saving for a trip to Italy...we put AT LEAST $1.00 a day into our ‘Italy Jar’...we are half way there!” International Credit Union Day was truly a reason for celebration for Midcoast FCU member and Brunswick resident Wanda Johnson, who won $250 for this winning entry in Maine Credit Unions’ Shared Branching Savings Tip Competition: “When my car was paid off, I made the payment to myself every month. 5 years later I had $9,000 for a down payment on a new car!” Due greatly to credit unions’ high level of participation in this campaign, Maine Shared Branching monthly transactions had the largest growth from July through September 2011 during the peak of the campaign, a 48% increase in transactions during the campaign period over the same period in 2010.

Plan now for financial life after graduation

The last year of college is full of hopes and expectations. In many cases, one of the not-so-wonderful new developments will be the need to start making student loan payments.

To establish a good credit record, you need to pay on time, every time. (Timely repayment can sometimes reward you with a lower interest rate.) Consider starting now to accumulate savings you can use for those first loan payments until you have a regular paycheck. Here’s how to do it:

1. Get a part-time job. Bonus points if you can you find a job or start a business connected with your major!

2. Live like a student. That means continually hunting for special deals, student discounts, and other ways to save money. Be a smart financial consumer: don’t waste money on overdraft fees, or charges for using out-of-network ATMs – the SURF ATM Network is a great resource for CU members!

3. Start saving. Once you start squirreling away savings, consider putting them in a Roth IRA with us. Young people in a low tax bracket are ideal candidates for Roth IRAs, which provide tax-free income later in life if you pay income tax now (which should be minimal) on your money.

Here’s to a great senior year!

Need Wheels? Maine Credit Unions Have Loans!

With college students heading back to school, and Maine’s winter weather looming, many may be wishing they had a more reliable ride to help handle the months ahead. Luckily, Maine credit unions offer car loans at rates that can’t be beat! Despite an economy that has prompted many lenders to pull back, lending is accessible and strong at Maine's credit unions.

More than the ability to get a loan at a trusted financial institution, choosing a Maine Credit Union for your loan is a decision that will save you money! The most recent study on the Economic Benefit of Credit Unions To Maine Consumers found that consumers saved more than $14 million annually by having an auto loan with a Maine credit union instead of another financial institution.

Coaching Kids To Stretch A Buck Makes A Memorable Back To School Lesson!

Back to school shopping is more than a fun way to beat the end of summer blues, it is also an opportunity for parents to share lessons on fiscal responsibility. A leader in financial education, Maine’s credit unions are encouraging parents to have their children participate in the shopping experience, from making a list to explaining about sales and coupons. Studies indicate that parents who encourage their children to participate in the shopping process provide their children with an opportunity to gain valuable experience in how money works and are more likely to develop strong money management skills.

With back to school sales already underway, it's time to make a plan and start shopping!

Here are some ideas to make the most of your back to school shopping experience:

1. Coach your kids on the concept of budgeting. Explain that spending too much now means there may not be enough later for something else they want.

2. Set a budget that encourages them to plan. Provide each child a set amount for their back to school needs and help them stick to that budget.

3. Help them inventory school supplies left over from last year. Can they reuse backpacks, notebooks, sports equipment or any other necessary items?

4. Ask them to make a list of what they really need. Have their needs really changed since the last school year? If a new outfit is essential for the first day of school, can they mix in clothes from their closet later on?

5. Hold a yard sale of outgrown or unneeded items to raise money. While you’ll probably want to oversee the sale, encourage your kids to get involved in the pricing, set-up, and selling. They’ll value the profits more, having worked for them.

6. Avoid paying full retail price. Start with charity and consignment shops. If you do need to buy new, peruse sale flyers and search for online coupons first. Above all, stick to your shopping list.

7. Consider sharing with the less fortunate. Many communities have an organization that provides back-to-school items to truly needy kids.

Summertime and the living is delicious!

While August may mean that summer is winding down, there is one part of the season that is still in full (and delicious) swing – Maine’s farm stands and farmer’s markets! This time of year, there is plenty of produce that is just reaching its peak – think corn, cucumbers and tomatoes (which also sounds like a great idea for a salad). Looking ahead to autumn’s offerings is also a great way to beat the impending fall blues. Just think of fresh apple cider, cheerful pumpkins and ghoulish gourds!

The abundance of local produce in Maine is not only delicious, but frequenting local vendors is also an easy way to cut down on your grocery bill (have you seen the price of supermarket lettuce?!).

And, while it seems that there is one around every corner this time of year, here is a website that lets you search for a farmer’s market near you!

Happy eating!

Raise your paw if you love summer!

Summer in Maine has endless adventures in store for all Mainers – including ones of the four legged variety. From runs on the beach, hikes in the woods, or even in this recent heat wave, lounging in front of an air conditioner, having a pet to enjoy the season with makes summer even sweeter.

The long warm days may inspire you to look for a new furry family member. While it’s easy to focus on what you’ll get from your new pet (unconditional love, a happy face to greet you, and the inability to stop talking in a baby voice), it is also important to consider what your new friend will mean to your wallet.

Here are just some of the expenses that pets can pack on:

• Price of your pet: Whether you buy your pet from a breeder, or adopt him, there will be some initial price to pay. Knowing how much you are willing to pay will help you decide the type of pet you will get, and where you will get him.

• Food: While puppies are small, they do get bigger. The bigger the dog, the more food they will eat. Something to think about!

• Pet care for when you travel: If you travel, there will likely be times where you cannot bring your pet, and may need to pay for boarding or someone to come and “babysit”.

• Vet bills/Medicine: Even healthy pets need shots and checkups, and with the summer often meaning tick season in Maine, anti-tick medication is often a must.

• Toys/supplies: Here’s where you can get creative! My new puppy is currently in love with an old tennis ball, as well as older toys my other dog has discarded…while the older dog now must have the puppy’s new toy. Bottom line - puppies don’t need the fanciest toys to be entertained, so don’t break the budget there. Instead, invest in necessities such as a quality collar, leash and crate.

• Replacements items: All puppies seem to have something they just MUST chew. When my older dog was a puppy, we went through four remote controls in a very short time. No matter how hard you try, where there are puppy teeth, there will be some damage.

If you think these are expenses you can fit into your budget, then it is time to start the puppy search! And in the end, how can you say no to that face?

From North to South, Maine’s Young & Free Spokester Celebrates Summer with Maine’s Credit Unions

In a trip that led him from the potato fields to the baseball dugout in the span of a few days, Young & Free Spokester Seth Poplaski recently spent time connecting with Maine’s 25 and under crowd at popular summer events. He began his journey in Fort Fairfield at the Annual Potato Blossom Festival, where the now famous, brightly-colored Young & Free vehicle was a part of the festival’s parade on July 16. Poplaski was joined by representatives from local credit unions, who helped hand out giveaways to the crowd.

“I had a great time in Fort Fairfield being a part of the Potato Blossom Festival. I was able to talk to many people about Young & Free Maine and the impact it could have on their lives, and also the benefits of joining a credit union,” Poplaski said. “It was my first trip up to that area of northern Maine, and it definitely opened my eyes to how big of an economic impact potatoes have on our economy.”

The colorful Young & Free car could then be spotted on the highway as Poplaski headed south to attend a Sanford Mainers baseball game on July 18. There, he greeted fans, and even took part in a water balloon toss.

“As an avid baseball fan, I jumped at the chance to go watch a summer game featuring the Sanford Mainers. Although they didn't come away with a win, I enjoyed watching the teams compete and talking to the fans of the Mainers and credit union members,” he said. “I was also invited to go on the field in the sixth inning and be a passenger on the ‘Moose Mobile’. What a great opportunity!”

The Sounds of Summer Music in Maine

The hills of Maine are alive with the sound of music. From Brownfield on the New Hampshire border to Lubec’s easternmost point in the United States, our summers are filled with extraordinary music and musicians.

Our favorite venue for music is Carol Noonan’s Stone Mountain Arts Center in Brownfield. She uses Maine’s vacationland image to capture big acts that like to visit here in the summer. Down East in Lubec, an amazing collection of international musicians gathers each summer, putting on Wednesday evening performances.

From Rockland’s now-famous Blues Festival, scheduled for July 15, 16, and 17, to Saddleback Mountain’s Bluegrass Revival August 12 and 13, you can see world-class musicians right here in Maine.

The American Folk Festival in Bangor puts a punctuation mark on our summer each year. This must-not-miss-event is scheduled for August 26, 27, and 28 and is international is scope, with venues small enough to get you close to the musicians, great food, and a terrific celebratory air. Linda and I plan to be there the entire weekend this year.

And if those kids or grandkids are getting antsy, consider a visit to the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife’s Maine Wildlife Park in Gray. Every weekend they offer special programs for kids as well as adults, and the animals there are sure to keep the children entertained.

Sing your way through summer!

Wherever you go – a stolen debit card doesn’t have to steal your entire trip. A Shared Branching location is an easy way to get cash fast – after a call to your credit union to make sure your account info stays safe, of course.

Or, if your travels include a large purchase of an item bought online, a quick visit to a Shared Branch at your destination saves you the need to travel with a large quantity of cash.

Wherever you go and whatever you do, it’s easy to find a Shared Branch in Maine or nationwide!

Seth Poplaski is Maine’s First Young & Free Spokesperson!

On June 10, in a surprise party in his honor, Maine’s Credit Unions announced that Seth is the 2011 Young & Free Maine Spokesperson!

Seth is a 2009 graduate of the University of Maine, and a Bangor resident. While he is currently employed at the Texas Roadhouse, he will be now trading in his cocktail shaker for some great new gear, including a Mac Book Pro and HD video camera – not to mention use of a new car for his year as our Young & Free spokesperson.

A longtime credit union member, Seth’s outgoing personality and journalism background prompted friends, family and even credit union employees to encourage him to apply for the position. In his campaign, Seth drew on his love of sports, coffee and all things Maine to connect with his fellow Gen Y-ers.

From a video featuring his slack lining technique, to reaching out to local media, Seth proved that he has the writing skills, on-air presence and ability to communicate with Maine’s 25 and under crowd that make him an obvious choice for this exciting new opportunity.

SURF, Shared Branching Help Make Memorial Day Memorable!

With what seems like weeks of rainy weather (hopefully) behind us, the idea of a long weekend getaway is even more appealing! While we can’t ensure that the weather will be wonderful, Maine’s credit unions can make sure that your long weekend travels are memorable for great reasons (say, finding a hidden gem of a restaurant) instead of for less great ones (such as being stranded with a flat tire and no access to cash).

While my travels aren’t taking me out of the state – only a couple hours north to attend a concert in Bangor, I know that I won’t have to add “stocking up on cash” to my pre-trip to do list. Rather, I can visit one of the several SURF ATMs in the area, and even use this search tool to find one near me! iPhone users can even simplify the process by downloading the SURF iPhone App!

Should any unexpected events cause me to need to access my credit union account, there are also several Shared Branching locations throughout my travel route, where I can be assured access just as if I were at my own credit union branch! Check out the many Shared Branching locations in Maine or across the nation, and celebrate the weekend worry-free!

Happy Long Weekend!!

Spring into Financial Literacy!

Did you know that April is Financial Literacy Month? Don’t worry if you didn’t plan a party! As this month comes to a close, here are some simple ways to celebrate and grow your own financial literacy level all year long!

Set Goals
Make clear financial goals, and break each one down into several short-term (less than 1 year), medium-term (1 to 3 years) and long-term (5 years or more) goals.

Get in Balance
Balance your checkbook each month to ensure you don’t overdraw your account when conducting debit card transactions.

Analyze your energy
An inexpensive energy cost analyzer can help you cut energy use and your bills!

Move your loan to a credit union
With lower rates, moving your auto loans or mortgage to a credit union can save you money. And, with conveniences such as automatic payments, you can be sure to avoid late payment fees.

Spend less than you earn
Pay yourself first. Your credit union can help you with this by automatically withdrawing money from your checking account and putting it into savings or an investment account.

Be Accountable
Take advantage of your credit union’s Holiday Club Account. Beyond saving for the holidays, this can help you save for major purchases, or ensure that you have money set aside it you need it.

Establish an emergency fund
Keep the money safe by putting it into a low-risk, accessible account such as a savings account or money market account.

Know your score
Review your credit reports to make sure all information is accurate, and get it corrected if it is not. This is particularly important as you prepare to make a large purchase such as a car or home.

Get connected
Sign up for remote access with your credit union. It’s the easiest way to keep an eye on your account, and gain a better understanding of how you are spending your money.

Start these good habits now, and by the time next April comes around, you will be ready to celebrate in (good financial) style!

ATV Trails - A Great Ride

Maine offers spectacular trails for ATV riders. Most trails open between mid-and-late May, giving you time, if you hurry, to get a loan from your credit union to buy a machine!

The Department of Conservation’s Parks and Lands Bureau offers a great trail map, obtained by calling 287-4958. BPL’s maps are also available on-line here.

More information can be obtained at www.atvmaine.org, the statewide organization that does a superb job representing and leading Maine’s ATV clubs and riders. You should also contact your local ATV club for a more detailed map of trails in your area.

Over 4,000 miles of designated ATV trails are now available throughout the state. Several state-owned or leased abandoned rail beds provide exceptional experiences including the Aroostook Valley Trail, Bangor and Aroostook Trail, and the Jay to Farmington Trail, all owned by the Bureau of Parks and Lands.

Many of the roads on our Public Reserved Lands and Wildlife Management Areas are open to ATV use.

Wherever you ride, stick to the roads and trails that have ATV signs, and please be aware that you must have the permission of landowners to ride on private land.

The Down East Sunrise Trail, a scenic rail-trail that runs along the entire Downeast coastal area in Washington and Hancock Counties, would be a great choice for either a day-trip or multi-day trip. This trail connects several scenic conservation areas, intersects spectacular rivers (bring your fishing rod!), and runs close to two state scenic byways. There are plenty of great lodges and restaurants in the area, some accessible right from the trail,

The Bureau of Parks and Lands has an excellent map of this trail. And lots of photos and information about activities on this trail can be found at www.sunrisetrail.org.

The trail also connects to the Duck Lake trails that put you deep into the “Maine wilderness” of northern Washington County. Hit the trail!

There's More Wilderness to Discover!

Are there mountain lions in Maine? Where’s the one place in the state that you are guaranteed to see a moose and a bear?

Mountain lions, moose, and bears are only some of the dozens of Maine critters at the Maine Wildlife Park in Gray. The park is right off the Gray exit of the Maine Turnpike.

The Wildlife Park opens on April 15 (weather permitting) and offers the best opportunity to see dozens of different members of the state’s animal kingdom in one place. All the information you need to plan your visit can be found here.

The park is managed by the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife where Lisa Kane is blessed with many volunteers who staff key positions at the park. Friends of the Maine Wildlife Park provide both volunteers and funds for this very special place that excites young and old.

You can see many of the animals in the “winter views” section of the park website that offers lots of videos and other information including admission fees, a map, a list of and interesting information about the animals, and a schedule of special events. You ought to put Saturday, May 4 on your schedule for the park’s “Bear Bonanza,” scheduled from 11 am to 2 pm.

This amazing place offers close-up looks at all of Maine’s top predators including coyotes and fishers, bobcats and their bigger cousins Canadian lynx, eagles, owls (including my favorite the tiny Saw-Whet), and hawks, and more from turtles to trout. You’ll even see a new Maine critter, the opposum, and be able to visit a great museum of the Maine Warden Service.

I can’t wait to take my two grandsons on their first park visit this summer. This is a “must see in Maine” for tourists and Mainers alike. And there’s a lot to like here!

Sharing means saving!

Mainers are known for their ingenuity. When the weather can go from sunny to a snowstorm in seconds, and end of winter potholes make flat tires seem commonplace, thinking on your feet is a necessity. Mainers are also creative in how they make the most of their money, and are always finding new ways to save. Maine’s Credit Unions are giving their members a way to share their best saving tips, through the new website, ShareItAndSave.org. There, you can share a tip, and each month the member who submits the most creative tip will be awarded $250!

Here are some of the tips we’ve received so far:

“I get paid bi-weekly, so I pay my budgeted bills first, so that I'm less likely to over spend.”

“I use a CU ATM card only, that’s set up to access only my savings account so it limits the amount I can take out daily.”

“I save over $500.00 a year just by making my own coffee for my ride to work.”

“Changing my home heating source from oil to pellets has saved me over $2000/year!”

“Credit cards make it very easy to spend money, carrying cash helps me maintain financial discipline and stick to my budget.”

To view more tips or to submit your own, visit ShareItAndSave.org!

Planning a Summer Vacation? Join the Club

On a cold, stormy day like today, nothing sounds better than going somewhere - anywhere - where there are warm beaches instead of snow banks. Vacations are a time to relax and unwind from day-to-day stress. The last thing you want to do is spend your vacation worrying about how you are going to pay for it when the bills come. The two easiest ways to lessen the financial sting of vacations are to save before you go, and plan how much to spend while you’re away. Maine credit unions have club accounts for you to set aside money for a specific purpose, in this case, a trip.

The easiest way to contribute to a club account is by having money direct deposited into that account weekly. Estimate how much your vacation will cost; don’t forget to factor in airfare, car expenses (gas or car rentals), hotels, meals, entertainment and extra spending money. Once you have figured out how much your vacation will cost, you can decide how much you are willing to charge to a credit card, and how much cash you will need for your trip. Putting this money into a club account eliminates the temptation to make a big purchase as you see your balance creeping up.

Here are some easy tips to help you plan for your next vacation:

• Tape a picture of your dream vacation to your fridge.
• Estimate how much the vacation will cost.
• Subtract how much of the vacation expenses you want to charge on your credit cards.
• The difference is how much cash you'll need for your trip. Divide that amount by the number of paychecks you'll receive before you go on vacation. That is how much you need to save per paycheck.

It's as easy as that. Now…you can relax and go back to dreaming of white, sandy beaches, palm trees, and a stress-free vacation.

Maine Credit Unions Share the Love!

While Valentine’s Day may be a few days away, this past week has been filled with many heart-warming moments from Maine credit unions.

On Monday, February 7, Maine's credit unions were joined by NBA Hall of Famer Rick Barry to celebrate their efforts towards "thawing" out hunger in Maine at the Thaw to End Hunger Celebration Event. At this annual event, credit unions were recognized for their success in raising the most funds ever for the Maine Credit Unions' Campaign for Ending Hunger, and the official, record-breaking total was announced. This year's total funds raised is $402,740.02, an increase of nearly $27,000 over last year's record!

On Tuesday, February 8, five credit unions with branches in the Midcoast region joined Governor LePage and the State Energy Office at the State House in Augusta to announce a new Credit Union program to assist consumers impacted by the recent closure of Thibeault Energy in Brunswick. The new program will offer affected consumers zero interest, no fee loans to purchase fuel.

Finally, while playing golf is currently just a daydream for most Mainers, on Thursday, February 10, credit union representatives throughout Maine came together for PeoplesChoice CU’s 8th annual Polar Bear Scramble, teeing off indoors on the state of the art golf simulators. The funds raised benefit both Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger and Maine Special Olympics.

Maine’s credit unions can even help you warm the heart of your Valentine! Many credit unions are currently selling items to benefit Ending Hunger that make perfect Valentine’s Day gifts! From CDs, to candles to wooden roses, supporting their efforts is a way to give a gift that gives twice – to your loved one, and to help end hunger in Maine!

Salute President’s Day by saving on a new car!

All holidays have something they are known for. Christmas has trees and lights, Hanukkah has menorahs, and Valentine’s Day has conversation hearts. But what comes to mind when talking about President’s Day? While often underappreciated (other than the welcome day off in a cold Maine month), President’s Day is a great time to buy a car! Dealers everywhere offer great sales on both new and used cars on this day, and with a day off from work, it’s a great time to go shopping!

An easy way to make the process pain-free is to get preapproved for an auto loan at your local credit union. Known for their low rates on auto loans, many credit unions simplify the process even more by offering online loan applications. President’s Day is February 21, so click here now to find a credit union near you, and get ready for that new car smell!

There's More in Maine CU members’ pockets

For nearly 20,000 members of two Maine credit unions, 2011 began with a surprise deposit - a year-end rebate and bonus. Members of Otis Federal Credit Union and Acadia Federal Credit Union received rebates totaling in excess of $700,000. For members of both credit unions, the gesture did not go unnoticed. One Otis FCU member remarked, "This is wonderful, and again highlights why I joined a credit union."

For Otis FCU, this is the sixth consecutive year the credit union has paid an interest refund and bonus. At the start of the New Year, the credit union returned nearly $350,000 to its members in the form of a 6% bonus on dividends earned in 2010 and a 6% interest refund on all loans including VISA credit cards.

Acadia FCU gave its members a 7% rebate on dividends and loan interest, which translated to approximately $350,000 in funds returned to its members. Dave Desjardins, President/CEO of Acadia FCU, explained, "We had a financially successful year despite the problems with the national economy. Our belief is that our members make us successful so we should share that success with them whenever possible. It's our way of saying 'thank you.'”

Jon Paradise, Governmental & Public Affairs Manager for the Maine Credit Union League, said about 10% of the nation's credit unions paid a year-end rebate and bonus in 2010. "However, all credit unions reinvest in their members throughout the year through better rates, fewer and lower fees, and enhanced products and services. Otis FCU and Acadia FCU are both to be commended for being able to return close to three-quarters of a million dollars to their members. In this economy, that is quite an accomplishment."

Make your New Year’s Financial Resolutions Stick!

Here are some simple ways to help you stay on track!

• Make a clear plan

• Narrow your financial focus to set reachable goals

• Focus on one resolution at a time – while working to rid yourself of debt, don’t also resolve to lose 30 pounds

• Take baby steps – even if it means saving just a few dollars from each paycheck

• Talk about your plan with friends and family to help you stay accountable

• Don’t let an impulse cause you to forget your resolution. The next time you're about to make a spur of the moment financial decision, stop and think

• Don't give up if you make a financial misstep

• Keep track. Knowing where your money is going makes it easier to prevent yourself from spending where and when you shouldn’t

• Let others help you save by increasing your contributions to an IRA account or your 401(k) plan

• Don’t waste your money on fees! Many credit unions offer free checking accounts, as well as fee-free ATMs

• Make yourself save automatically, by arranging to have extra money taken out of your paycheck - either through payroll deduction or by having money moved from your checking to your savings account every time a paycheck is deposited

• Reward yourself for sticking with your resolution – just don’t do it by making a purchase!

Looking to slim down your debt? Start at a credit union!

While losing weight is a top New Year’s resolution for many, losing debt is also a sure way to make 2011 a great year. One Maine credit union, Maine State CU in Augusta, is helping members reach their financial goals with the online tool, Debt in Focus. This web application analyzes a member’s debt. After answering a few questions about income and current debts, a simple financial analysis provides the user with a wealth of information, including debt to income ratios, debt payment schedules, and suggested personal action strategies to help keep the member’s finances moving forward.

Dan Emery, Marketing Specialist for the credit union, said that this is a tool that members have been using regularly, and is a great way to get started on a budget. “We want to give our members the tools they need to gain financial control. Having a budget, tracking expenses and creating a plan are the first steps in this process,” he said.

Credit unions throughout the state have many ways to help you become financially fit, from tools like Debit in Focus, to Financial Literacy fairs, workshops, as well as helpful articles and other online resources. Visit a credit union’s website, or stop in your local branch to start 2011 on the right financial foot!
